Why the Password? Short Answer: To protect your email addresses from Spammers. Long Answer: Guestbooks all over the internet have recently been the target of unscrupulous spammers. They have software that automatically surfs the web for pages with lots of email addresses on them (like a guestbook) and collects them. They are called "email harvesting spiders". Our LHHS Web Team researched the software builders and their methods and determined that removing the guestbook from public view was the best way to stop the harvesting of our emails. It will not stop spamming from our email addresses that are already on spam lists before Sept 1, 2003, but we think it will stop future collection into those spam lists. It will also will not stop someone from manually entering our guestbooks and turning on their email collection software, but our research indicates that that is very unlikely, since that takes too many human hours. The collection is done automatically by robot software (called spiders) that works in the same way search engines regularly visit web pages and scan the text for info. We will be monitoring our success by planting special email addresses into each guestbook, so that if any spiders get through our scheme, we will be aware of it and can take more drastic measures.
